C. 3L Class Campaign – Adam Maldonado
——
• Questions & Comments
Anoush – I was a representative for the 3L Class Campaign and had a lot of issues with the way it was conducted. The percentage of the 3L class that donates goes toward our US News Ranking. The process was murky and not transparent. The bottom line is that despite efforts, only 43% or 44% of the 3L class donated. This is a percentage that the administration should take into consideration. It is how the students feel about the law school. It was unclear that the donations would go towards what we wanted. It was unclear what would happen if the donations did not meet certain earmarks. The Alumni Center had the option to place some donations in the annual fund, which is the Dean’s discretionary fund. I did not like that the Dean’s discretionary fund was called that because it was misleading. It was unclear where the administration wanted the donations to go. They are paying us to donate. Harvard may do that but…
Shanti – I agree with most of what Anoush stated. Class donations account for less than 5% of our US New Ranking. That 5% is shared with the other categories. That is how much it affects ours ranking. On the other hand if it the alumni request it, it is a new incentive.
Catherine – Is this a done deal?
• Adam – No, I just wanted to inform everyone. It is important that ASUCH knows the process.
Jennifer – the 3L class was supposed to help with the 3L Class Campaign but that did not happen. There are a lot of dissatisfied 3Ls this year.
Yuwynn – Giving back to the law school is good but it is difficult with the economy the way it is.
Adam – This is a win-win situation for ASUCH. If more than 200 3Ls go to Spring Fling, the Alumni Center will reimburse ASUCH for the extra discounted tickets. Any extra funds from the $2,000 donation will go to the Tenderloin After School Program, the charity that Spring Fling will donate to, or to ASUCH.
Catherine – I am uneasy about this because if there is that low of a percentage of 3L class donations, then there may be something going on. Perhaps they are avoiding an issue. 3Ls, can you share with us the feedback that you receive? This is exactly like giving $1 to each student to get 100% class donations (Harvard).
Adam – It is possible that this will not improve our percentage of 3L class donations at all.
Khalid – When you press the Alumni Center about being unclear (something Vien missed)…?
• Anoush – There was an email sent about donating $1. That is so reflective that . We had an event at Mr. Smith’s with a professional photographer and open bar for 3 hours, section compietition there is no money for a no prize other than good will.
Ravi – I think everything was clearly laid out but we have an apathetic class. People just like to complain rather than fixing the problem. People should reflect their angst to the Image Committee, which gives a presentation to UC Hastings.
• Adam – Staplers?
Britt – I think people want to donate.
D. ASUCH Website – Steven Guess
• ASUCH Website: www.asuch.org/home
• I do not know the status of the ASUCH Stamp but the logo selected would be put on the website.
• The website is blue and gold, University of California colors.
• I need to take photographs of UC Hastings.
• The website is designed to be very easy to update. It is like a blog on the back end with one box to fill in. It is very straight forward, very easy to use, and requires no expertise.
• I am totally open to suggestions.
• Potential budget section?
• Adam – There will be a forum for students to ask ASUCH questions.
• Ravi – Can people be forwarded postings in the forum?
Steven – Okay.
• The student organization webpages will basically be like blogs filtered through the main page. On the front page will be every student organization update.
• There is a calendar feature but I am working out the bugs.
4. Reports of Executive Officers & Committee Chairs
A. President – Adam Maldonado
B. Internal Vice President – Theodore Chadwick
• Attendance Between 2Ls and 3Ls
• Business Discount Card
Each ASUCH member is responsible for signing up for 2 businesses.
Each ASUCH member will be rewarded 2 service hours total, or 1 per business.
Everyone should go in pairs so no one is alone in the Tenderloin. I am not taking that liability.
Tell the businesses that we would appreciate discount and in exchange they will receive free advertising for UC Hastings students. The advertising will be paid for by UC Hastings.
The administration has agreed to pay for printing cost.
Questions & Comments

The price includes 2 hours of bowling, bowling shoes for each person, and a pitcher per team.
• Questions & Comments
Janet – Is it possible to have a prize for the worst team?
• Matt – I will talk to Dan.
Janet – Catherine suggested that people donate a can to get entered into the raffle.
Jennifer – I think the email problem is about email forwarding. The raffle is more fair.
Adam – The self dealing problem that ASUCH deals with will not be a real problem because there are 5 people on each team.

K. Parliamentarian – Theodore Chadwick
• Call to Question Clarification
When someone makes a motion to call to question, no more questions or points of whatever may be made.
If you still have questions after the motion to call to question is made, you should vote no.
Shanti – What if someone makes a motion to call to question and he/she does not realize that other people still have questions? How do you address that?
• Adam – People will make motions to call to question and then other people will make a fuss about having questions.
5. Resolutions/Miscellaneous
A. ASUCH Funding Survey
• Adam – We must address this matter first because it was tabled from the last meeting.
Background – The committee sent over 100 emails editing the language of the ASUCH Funding Survey.
Please take a moment to read the ASUCH Funding Survey.
I will ask for unanimous consent. If that does not pass, then we will go through each suggestion and vote.
• Seda – Even though I was on the committee, I still do not feel comfortable with the ASUCH Funding Survey. I felt rushed. I do not feel it is as neutral as it could be.
• Adam – Please take into account that the committee members have different opinions.
• Kalev – Just reading this, I think this survey is a budget rationale. It is confusing.
• Anoush – In the last draft, the paragraph between question 6 and 7 seemed different. In the last draft, there was a statement about how other law schools do this. I felt like the last draft was more helpful in providing information.
Derrick – I have no problem adding that information.
• Jonathan – Based on these questions, I motion to table this matter to the end of this meeting.
• Motion to Table the ASUCH Funding Survey Until the End of This Meeting – Jonathan
Adam – The effect of this motion would be to stop discussion and address Jonathan’s Responsible Data Collection Act. The result of that resolution will determine if we go back to the ASUCH Funding Survey.

B. Responsible Data Collection Act – Jonathan Trunnell
• Surveys are not magical. They are scientific tools. With surveys, you ask questions to which people already know the answers. If you are educating while simultaneously asking questions, then you are delving into psychology. The trouble is that you must be more scientific. That is not possible in an adversarial committee setting. You would need rigorous scientific neutrality. The main problem is substantive. Students will have insufficient information or they will read too much and make uninformed decisions. Surveys must carefully shepherd time. It is not going to work. The proper form is an election in which people explain their views. This does not provide enough information for students to make an informed decision. We cannot expect people to make the same decision that took us hours to make in much less time (30 seconds) knowing nothing. That is the primary criticism.
• Questions & Answer
Ravi – What is your pre law school background?
• I was a computer researcher in anthropology and performed statistical analysis on archives.
• I also worked at 826 Valencia, performing statistical analysis on student teacher evaluations.
Britt – Would you be willing to propose an alternative to the ASUCH Funding Survey?
• This is a problem that should be addressed in the democratic forum. It should be part of the dialogue of running in the ASUCH Elections. It is not about a percentage break down. It should be something that emerges from the democratic process.
• Adam – Theodore will be able to interrupt if questions are argumentative.
• Britt – In the ASUCH Elections, will issues be watered down?
• Yes.
• Ravi – Did you read this? I do not think you did.
• Theodore – Argumentative.
Catherine – If we pass this resolution, can no survey on this issue be administered?
• Yes but we can administer a survey with issues like BOB.
Catherine – Is it not good for student government to collect information?
• Theodore -Argumentative.
• Theodore – Any resolution can be overturned by another resolution.
Janet – What is the difference between this ASUCH Funding Survey and the BOB Survey?
• The BOB Survey was good because BOB is a visible part of life at UC Hastings. Regarding cultural graduations, we are asking people to form snap judgments without the requisite information to do so.
Britt – Would you consider informing the student body in a time period where we could give them information then later give them a survey?
• It sounds like you want a town hall meeting.
• Theodore – Whose pen is this?
Sarah – This resolution seems broader than this ASUCH Funding Survey.
• I would accept an amendment to change the name. I did not include the name of the survey because we did not receive a final draft until just now.
Anoush – Is there another way to get information?
• Student government should always act with legitimacy.
Ravi – Are you going to be the arbiter of all that is science?
• We are all arbiters of science.
Catherine – You use “opinion pole” interchangeably with “survey.” If I ask my friends what they think on the Beach, would that be prohibited?
• We have replaced the contentious language with the name of this survey.
• Amendment – Jonathan
Change “survey” and “opinion pole” to “ASUCH Funding Survey.”
